Top tips on getting baby to sleep better for longer

Welcoming a new addition to your family is an incredibly joyous experience, but it can also come with its fair share of challenges, especially when it comes to sleep. As a new parent, you may find yourself yearning for those precious hours of uninterrupted sleep. Fortunately, there are several strategies and tips you can employ to help your baby develop healthy sleep habits and settle into a peaceful slumber routine.     Things that I found most effective with getting my baby to sleep well.

    • Using a sleep sack or bag- With many different tog levels for different temperatures, and different materials My little one was always comfortable and I wouldn't worry about him over heating, or getting cold. I had a muslin grow bag for summer, breathable and light weight. For winter i had a lovely thick tog sleep sack. I would take this up with the clean nappy and sleepsuit, and pop him straight in it after bath time.

    • Rigid bedtime Routine- One thing I did from new born, was make sure that I carried out the same routine each night at the same time. We would have some play time after dinner, then head up for a lovely warm bubble bath, followed by snuggles and stories, before heading down to his bedroom. The room was dimly lit, with a night light and I had his bed time milk ready for him to have and then go straight down. By sticking to a rigid routine in the early days, until he was almost like clockwork We could then know exactly what time we could do things around him as he got older.

    • Having the nursery sleep ready after the bath- before taking my little one up for a bath, I would make sure his blinds were closed, night light was on and his milk was ready to go. This calming and sleepy environment was perfect after bath time, he would often be dozing off seconds after getting in there. we would sit and have bed time milk and cuddles in my comfy chair and he would be fast asleep within minutes.

    • Consistent and regular day time nap/naps- Both of my children have always had two day time naps, a morning and an afternoon one. Each baby is different, and your baby may suit a long nap after lunch, but I would start with trying to read your babies cues. If your baby isn't tired, they will soon let you know! Don't forget, stimulation whether it be physical or mental can make your child more or less tired. I did find that in summer time, we really did benefit from a black out blind, making the room darker also helped keep it cool on those hot days!

    • Comforter- Although it is not advised to put soft toys and loose blankets in with baby, your baby make take comfort in other things such as: White noise, His growbag or grow sack, a dummy, even sleep mittens! My little boy became so attached to his sleep mittens , that he twiddled a sock as he grew up! Please do remember, until your baby has enough control to roll over and push themselves up, it is recommended that your avoid anything loose in the cot or crib.
